Basel got a goal back immediately as Danny Gonzalez ran onto a lovely through ball and finished into the bottom right corner of Casillas. Basel threatened Real Madrid in the second half but Madrid always looked deadly on the counter and some neat interplay between Ronaldo and Benzema set up Benzema in the box and the Frenchman fired the ball into the net via the crossbar.
Madrid would be looking to replicate this form at the weekend in the league and also in the champions league as they seek to be the first team in the modern era to successfully defend the champions league trophy.
